Information on Special Open Enrollment for County Teamsters

Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019

Since the ratification of the new San Bernardino County Teamsters contract on September 10, 2019, Teamsters Local 1932 has argued that the County should conduct Open Enrollment for its health care options due to all of the negotiated-for changes to its health care options. Today, we are pleased to announce that the County agrees with our assessment that Open Enrollment is needed.

Special Open Enrollment for eligible Teamsters-represented employees covered by the new contract will be held between November 4 and November 15. Eligible employees will receive notification of the Special OE by County HR via email or letter if no email is on file with HR in mid-October.

During this Special Open Enrollment, eligible employees may choose a higher level of coverage (e.g. employee only to family coverage, etc.) or change plans (Gold Plan to Platinum Plan, Blue Shield to Kaiser). Employees may also add eligible dependents or select coverage under a County plan if they are currently opting out or waiving coverage. Grandfathered employees are not eligible to participate in this special open enrollment since they do not meet the IRS requirements.

Please note — the County has recently sent messages concerning a Modified Benefit Options (MBO) Open Enrollment between Sept. 23 and Oct. 4. The Special Open Enrollment for County health care options is separate from the MBO Open Enrollment. The MBO is an optional plan that allows members to exchange benefits for a small increase in pay. Please beware that electing to participate in MBO will reduce your benefits. If you have questions about the MBO, please contact your Business Agent.
